Junior BETA Club Bylaws
Article I
Name
The name of this organization shall be the Currituck County Middle School Chapter of the National Junior BETA Club.
Article II
Time and Place of Meetings
The time and place of meetings of this chapter of the National Junior Beta Club shall be decided upon only after consultation with, and upon approval of, the sponsors of Currituck County Middle School National Junior BETA Club.
Article III
Affiliation and Coordination
This chapter of The National Junior BETA Club is an integral part of the central organization of the National Junior Beta Club, and shall be governed by the academic and financial policies laid down in the National Constitution of the central organization of the National Junior Beta Club. Its coat‐of‐arms, motto, colors, creed, and official insignia shall be those of the National organization of The National Junior Beta Club.
Article IV
The Board
The board will consist of the teacher sponsors of this BETA Club Chapter.
Article V
Purpose
The purpose of this organization shall be the promotion of scholarship, leadership, and good citizenship at Currituck County Middle School and its surrounding community.
Article VI
The Pledge
Students will recite the official BETA Pledge at each official meeting.
“I solemnly declare that I shall always strive to hold fast to the principles of honesty; to endeavor constantly to maintain a creditable record; to cultivate in my life and conduct the principles of morality, service and leadership.
I further pledge myself to cooperate with the members of this club in the promotion of a sense of individual responsibility to our school, community, State and Nation; to make right the master of might; and to consecrate our comradeship to mutual helpfulness and to the
betterment of our fellow students.”
Article VII
Invitation and Induction of Members
The invitation and induction of new members into the membership of this Chapter of the National Junior BETA Club shall take place twice yearly and be one of dignity appropriate to the
ideals of the organization.
Article VIII
Standards of Membership
The standards of membership of the Currituck County Middle School chapter of the National Junior BETA Club must conform to the general features as laid down in the National Constitution, the Currituck County Middle School Constitution and Bylaws and in all cases must be approved by the Board. Its members must be from Currituck County Middle School students in grades 6-8. The scholastic requirements for membership in this chapter of the National Junior BETA Club shall be an overall unweighted average of 93 or above. In addition, members must demonstrate the following qualities: worthy character (honest and dependable), credible achievement (academic, athletic, artistic or otherwise), and commendable attitude (positive and helpful). Members must not have received any Currituck County Middle School discipline referrals, nor been convicted of any act classified as a misdemeanor or felony by the State Code of North Carolina or the United States. All members will report their grades to the sponsor at the end of each quarter. To retain membership, students must participate in all BETA sponsored events, including fundraising activities, and complete all required service hours in a timely manner.
Article IX
Loss of Membership
A member of this chapter of the BETA Club may be dropped from membership if he/ she is absent, without justifiable reason and the prior approval of the board sponsor, from two regular meetings per semester. A member of this chapter of The National Junior BETA club may be dropped from membership if his/ her scholastic record falls below the 93 average or for any case of academic integrity; however, no member may be dropped from membership for scholastic deficiency without being accorded a probationary period of one semester to raise his/ her scholastic record above the minimum required for membership. A member of this Chapter of the National Junior BETA Club will be placed on probation for failure to complete their 15 volunteer hours each year. A student may not submit any hours as personal volunteer projects for which he or she has received any form of compensation. The Board of Currituck County Middle School chapter of the Junior BETA Club may drop a member from membership for moral or disciplinary reasons that are deemed to be sufficient. A student so dropped from membership may be reinstated, provided he/she meets the requirements laid down in the Constitution and Bylaws of this chapter of The National Junior BETA Club after sufficient time has passed since being dropped from membership (minimum one full semester). For a member who has been dropped from membership, a record of this action shall be relayed to the National Office of The National Junior BETA Club and to the High School Chapter of National BETA immediately.
Article X
Service Projects
As soon as possible after its activation in the Fall semester of the school year, the Chapter will undertake programs of service which will be of benefit to the community. The service projects shall be decided upon by the teacher sponsors and student officers. At a minimum, Currituck County Middle School National Junior BETA Club will sponsor four inside service projects per year, two for the Fall semester and two for the Spring semester. Ten days BEFORE the end of each semester, members must submit their record of service. Each member must complete 15 hours of community service per year from his/her own personal volunteer work (outside project) and should come from a minimum of two different volunteer activities. The record of service shall record the number of hours and the type of service performed, as well as whether the project was an inside or outside project. The student and the adult supervisor of the volunteer service event shall sign the record of service. The Beta Club will provide this form, “CCMS BETA Community Service Record.”
Article XI
Local Dues
The local dues of this Chapter of the National Junior BETA Club shall be thirty-five dollars per year due upon acceptance into the Currituck County Middle School National Junior BETA Club.
Article XII
Amending the Bylaws
The Bylaws of this Chapter of the National Junior BETA Club may be amended by a two‐thirds vote of the membership, provided such amendment is placed before the club at a previous meeting and a quorum is present. The Bylaws will be reviewed yearly in April to determine if amendments are necessary.
Article XIII
Quorum
A majority, to exceed 50%, of the membership, shall constitute a quorum of the membership. No action may be taken, which is binding upon the membership, unless a quorum is present. However, certain matters, such as a discussion of means of taking in new members, the presentation of program, etc., may be carried on at a regular or special meeting without a quorum being present.
Article XIV
Officers
The officers of this chapter of the National Junior BETA Club shall be: a president, a vice president, a secretary, and a treasurer.
The duties of the president shall be: to preside at the meetings; to appoint the committees of the chapter (unless otherwise provided for in the bylaws); to represent this organization when necessary; and to administer the policies as laid down in this constitution and its by‐laws.
The duties of the vice president shall be: to preside at meetings when the president is absent or incapacitated to perform the duties of the office; and shall assist in administering the affairs of the chapter‐serving on such committees as are designated in the bylaws and to be in charge of the publicizing inside service project opportunities.
The duties of the secretary shall be: to keep a record of membership; to record the minutes of the meetings, and to record individual service hour reports electronically at the end of each semester.
The duties of the treasurer shall be: responsible for reporting funds at meetings and appropriating funds as needed throughout the year. The treasurer will ensure that the BETA Club funds never drop below a set mark. The treasurer will also serve as the head of the fundraising committee, to include bringing ideas to each meeting on ways to increase funds in the account.
To become qualified to run for office, members must meet the following criteria:
- Be a member in excellent standing.
- Completed and submitted all service hours prior to March 1 of the current year.
- Attended every BETA Club meeting.
- Attended every BETA Club ceremony.
- Participated in every BETA Club fundraising activity.
- Have no violations of the guidelines of the BETA Club.
- Have no administrative concerns within Currituck County Middle School.
