Transfer Students

Students new to Currituck County Schools

If a student with a disability transfers to Currituck County Schools (CCS)  from another school district with a 504 Plan, CCS must review the plan and supporting documentation within 45 days of  enrollment (time may vary for those enrolling in the summer).  The 504 team will accept the student’s current plan on a temporary basis while waiting to re-evaluate the student.  Upon reevaluation, if the 504 team determines that the student’s physical or mental impairment no longer substantially limits his/her ability to learn or perform any of the major life activities, the student is no longer eligible for services under Section 504.

Student re-enrolls in Currituck County Schools

A student who re-enrolls in CCS must also be reevaluated to determine if the student continues to meet eligibility requirements.  The 504 team will accept the student’s former plan (if the end date is less than a year from the new enrollment date) on a temporary basis while waiting to reevaluate the student.  If the student’s 504 Plan is outdated or the student was exited or found not eligible under Section 504 prior to withdrawal from CCS, the 504 team would begin the referral process for eligibility determination.

Student Transfers to another School In District

When a student moves from one CCS school to another, the sending schools 504 coordinator must contact the receiving school’s 504 Coordinator to provide notification of the incoming student and his/her 504 status.  This must be done within 5 days prior or 3 days after enrollment.
