Sophomore Resources
-
Sophomores, this is an important time to begin planning out your remaining two years of high school. Below is some information regarding AP Capstone and Dual enrollment.
AP Capstone:
Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses. Taking these courses also gives students an opportunity to accrue college credit if they receive a 3 or higher on the AP exam.
Students can choose to complete the AP Capstone by taking AP Seminar (10th or 11th grade), AP Research (11th or 12th grade), plus 4 other AP courses.
Please look at our Course Catalog for AP course offerings. Students may also have the opportunity to take AP courses through NCVPS (North Carolina Virtual Public Schools) if they qualify. Currently, our AP courses are offered as year long.
Please reach out to your counselor if you are thinking about taking COA courses at any point in your high school career.
Dual Enrollment:
Dual enrollment is an opportunity for students to accrue college credit through College of the Albemarle (COA), our local community college. Students are required to attend an information session with our COA liaison.
Students must have a 2.8 unweighted GPA or higher and be either a junior or a senior to participate. Sophomores are welcome to apply during the second semester to take Fall semester classes starting their junior year.
Community college credits are transferrable to any 2-year or 4-year university within the UNC system as long as the student achieves a C or higher in the course. For any other college, please check with their admission office.
Please reach out to your counselor if you are thinking about taking COA courses at any point in your high school career.
